Rules and requirements

Eligibility

  1. Project entries must be works that have achieved substantial completion within the last two years (since September 2015).

  2. The Project must be located in Connecticut (except for the Out of State Project category).

  3. The Project does not need to be occupied, but must be substantially complete and able to demonstrate significant "green" strategies and performance (see Judging and Criteria below).


Entry categories

JUDY SWANN GREEN ADVOCATE:

One (1) Green Advocate award will be given to a recipient who is an environmental steward showing excellence in promoting sustainability through education, example, outreach, and leadership. Individuals, organizations, or municipalities are eligible to be nominated as Green Advocates. The award is named after the CTGBC's longtime Executive Director, Judy Swann.

PROJECTS:

Projects may be nominated in one of the following categories. Built projects must be declared either new construction or renovations.

  • Residential Project
  • Commercial Project
  • Public/Institutional Project
  • Out of State Project
    For the first time, CTGBC is offering the Out of State Project category for CT residents or firms that engage in green building projects outside of CT. Residents must live within the state borders and firms must have had the services for the project completed by their CT office.
  • Student Design
    The Student Design category seeks projects that intend to promote study and research in the field of environmentally sustainable building, design and operation and that advance the study and practice of sustainable building. Entries must have been completed while the student(s) is enrolled in school, and after September 2015. Student(s) must be either a CT resident, or attending an accredited High School or College/University in CT. The submitted project may either be part of an assignment, or extra-curricular work.

 

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, each entry must be submitted as a PowerPoint presentation using this template (instructions are in the notes at the bottom of the first two slides). File sizes must be kept under 20 MB (see tips for keeping file sizes down*). Submissions must include the following:

  1. Completed official entry form and a clear description of project team members' roles within the project.

  2. A maximum of 10 slides describing the goals, challenges, and solutions of the project team. Please include performance metrics to describe the success of your project.

  3. Photos/Drawings - a minimum of 5, and maximum of 10 photos, renderings, or drawings. Images should include the exterior, the interior, and any elements that illustrate the outstanding sustainable aspects of your project.

*Tips for keeping your PowerPoint file size down: no videos, limited animations, lower resolution photos if necessary.

Students: $25

**Non-Members can also join the CTGBC ($50 annual membership dues) and then enter their award submission for $50 - the same total price as Non-Member submission!

Criteria for judging

The criteria below will be used for judging each project. Weight is given to documented performance data for building systems & components.

  • Clear description of sustainable goals, challenges, and solutions of the project

  • Quality of design solutions

  • Overall aesthetics of the project

  • Innovative strategies or technologies

  • Performance metrics

And as applicable:

  • Certifications or awards

  • Energy usage

  • Water conservation strategies

  • Responsible materials use

  • Site design and transport linkage

  • Indoor air quality strategies

 

Jury

The Jury will be composed of qualified professionals chosen by the CTGBC 2017 Awards Committee. The Jury reserves the right to re-categorize entries, at its discretion.

Awards

Alexion Award of Excellence - Only one Award of Excellence will be given, selected from all submissions, in all categories. It is awarded based on the jury’s overall impressions for the most innovative, sustainable project.

Award of Honor - Only one Award of Honor may be given in each category, for outstanding sustainable achievements in that category.

Award of Merit - Any number of this award may be granted. Selected at the discretion of the jury, it recognizes special, noteworthy accomplishment.


Deadline/Announcement of Winners

All entries must be submitted through our website by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Award winners will be announced by Friday, October 13, 2017. All award winners must send at least one representative to the awards ceremony on November 2, 2017.


Publicity of Award Winners

All submissions (including photos) become the property of the CTGBC and may be used at the discretion of the CTGBC. Submission photographs and supporting information will be used for publicity purposes only.

Award winning projects will be published on the CTGBC website: www.ctgbc.org

--Submissions failing to meet all of the Entry Requirements will be rendered in default and will not be judged.

--Your submission will also include your permission for the CTGBC to publish any or all parts of your submission. We will honor any request for confidentiality of an owner if requested.
