Course Description: The Introduction to the WELL Building StandardTM presentation provides an overview of the WELL Building Standard ideology, structure, and certification process. The medical basis for the concept categories is introduced along with design and construction strategies to create healthy buildings. The time has come to elevate human health and comfort to the forefront of building practices and reinvent buildings that are not only better for the planet—but also for people. This presentation will introduce how to do this using the WELL Building Standard as the framework.

Audience: Design professionals, contractors, developers, owners, facilities managers, sustainability consultants, government officials and employees of public agencies who are interested in furthering health through design of the built environment, specifically in commercial and institutional building types.

  • Learn how to utilize the WELL Building Standard as a resource and design tool
  • Recognize the seven WELL Concepts and affiliated Features
  • Identify strategies to address human health through design
  • Understand pathways to WELL Certification or Compliance

Instructor: Chad Groshart, IALD, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP is an Associate Director and Global Lighting Practice Leader with Atelier Ten, an international Environmental design consulting firm. Mr. Groshart, has extensive experience with high performance lighting design for public and institutional projects both in the US and overseas. He is a professional member of the International Association of Lighting Designers, Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and. Chad is also an Voting member of the ASHRAE/ IES 90.1 committee. He holds a Masters in Architectural Lighting Design from Parson’s the New School for Design in New York and is an adjunct instructor in that program. In 2016 and 2017 Chad donated, delivered and installed solar lighting systems in rural Haiti with six of his graduate students.

Chad has been involved with the WELL Standard since 2014. He is a peer reviewer, a WELL AP test question writer and is a member of WELL Faculty. His project experience includes a WELL Platinum/LEED V4 Platinum office building in New York City, and several large WELL Silver projects on the West Coast.
