Paid Internship for Marketing & Communications Committee - Fall 2018

The Connecticut Green Building Council (CTGBC) is an aligned chapter of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) which covers the state of Connecticut. We are committed to transforming the way our buildings and communities are designed, constructed and operated, to ensure that our built environment is a healthier place for all to live, work and play in.

Description of Internship:

The Marketing & Communications Intern will gain valuable insight into green building and non-profit public relations and communications by working directly with the CTGBC Marketing & Communications Committee and the CTGBC Board of Directors.  Students interested in the building trades, design, architecture, sustainability, environmental nonprofits, and communications are encouraged to apply (but all fields may apply).

Duties & Responsibilities:

Overall duties & responsibilities of this position include, but may not be limited to:

  • Content development for online articles and the CTGBC webpage (StarChapter)
  • Assist in researching and monitoring industry trends and developing strategies to engage CTGBC community via social media channels and other forms of communication
  • Monitor other USGBC Chapters to identify and explore best practices in other chapters
  • Assist with the development, messaging, and content creation of social media content and announcements
  • Attend some CTGBC and Emerging Professionals events to generate real-time social media content
  • Support the production of the bi-weekly CTGBC E-Blast and Quarterly Newsletter
  • Assist in planning for and producing multimedia assets (vlogs, blog posts, interviews, etc.)
  • Monitor social media discussions relevant to CTGBC, LEED, green building, and sustainability, and reporting on trends
  • Participate in planning meetings and contribute to marketing and communications plans for CTGBC initiatives
  • Assist with responding to data and research inquiries, fact checking for articles, media inquiries, and internal content development
  • Assist with responding to both member and non-member requests   

Interns will be encouraged to participate in planning meetings and contribute their ideas to the CTGBC Board of Directors.

Work Schedule/Time Commitment:

Flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, approximately 10 hours/week, with exact days and times to be determined per school schedule.  Some job duties may be done from home, but attendance at some CTGBC meetings and events (located throughout the state) is required.  Parameters of the project (scheduling, tasks, deadlines, and deliverables) will be set up with the Marketing and Communications Committee the first week of the internship. 


This is a paid internship for $2,500.  This will be paid as a lump sum at the end of the term.  The expectation is to work an average 10 hours per week for 16 weeks, which will average $15 per hour (not to exceed $2,500).  We will also accept applications for non-paid internships for interested students, who can petition for credit at most institutions (will require additional efforts on the part of the intern to execute).

Applications will be accepted through August 17th, 2018.  Final decisions will be made before August 24th, and students will be notified by August 31st.  Internship will begin either the first or second week in September (depending on student’s school year and availability), and will be completed before the end of the Fall Term.


The intern will work with the Marketing and Communications Committee to formulate a portfolio of deliverables, including a tracking system to monitor weekly progress.  This portfolio of tasks (tweets, social media posts, written content, research write-ups, meetings attended, etc.) will be due at the end of the term, along with a 2 page write-up of the experience and Lessons Learned.  In this write-up, please include suggestions for CTGBC to improve its Marketing and Communications strategies.
